1. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “I seek refuge in the Lord of the daybreak

2. from the evil of whatever He has created,

3. and from the evil of the night when it grows dark,

4. and from the evil of those ˹witches casting spells by˺ blowing onto knots,

Surah al-Falaq 113: 1–5

The virtues and benefits surah al-Falaq

1. Protection from all forms of evil, one of which is related to magic.

Surah al-Falaq, which is related to Allah’s protection, automatically makes the letter al-Falaq has one of the functions and benefits of protecting its readers from magic interference.  There is a story from Hadist narrated by Aisha narated hadith:

Translation: The Prophet ﷺ continued for such-and-such period imagining that he has slept (had sexual relations) with his wives, and in fact, he did not. One day he said, to me, “O `Aisha! Allah has instructed me regarding a matter about which I had asked Him. There came to me two men, one of them sat near my feet and the other near my head. The one near my feet, asked the one near my head (pointing at me), ‘What is wrong with this man? The latter replied, ‘He is under the effect of magic.’ The first one asked, ‘Who had worked magic on him?’ The other replied, ‘Lubaid bin Asam.’ The first one asked, ‘What material (did he use)?’ The other replied, ‘The skin of the pollen of a male date tree with a comb and the hair stuck to it, kept under a stone in the well of Dharwan.”‘ Then the Prophet ﷺ went to that well and said, “This is the same well which was shown to me in the dream. The tops of its date-palm trees look like the heads of the devils, and its water looks like the Henna infusion.” Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered that those things be taken out. I said, “O Allah’s Messenger ﷺ! Won’t you disclose (the magic object)?” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Allah has cured me, and I hate to circulate the evil among the people.” `Aisha added, “(The magician) Lubaid bin Asam was a man from Bani Zuraiq, an ally of the Jews”.

In the book, Dalail an-Nubuwwah, by al-Baihaqi mentions that Rasulullah ﷺ read Surah al-Falaq among the Surah recommended to expel magic.

2. Surah that Rasulullah ﷺ always recite when he was going to bed every night.

Hadith narrated by Aisyah RA:

Translation: Whenever the Prophet ﷺ went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times.

3. Rasulullah said that the Surah al-Falaq was one Surah between the two Surah that had never been revealed before.

‘Uqbah bin Amir Al-Juhni narrated that:

Translation: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah has revealed to me Ayat the likes of which have not been seen: “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind…” until the end of the Surat. “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of Al-Falaq…” until the end of the Surat.

4. Not only as a magic barrier, but this Surah is also useful as healing and also avoids envy.

Hadith Narrated`Aisha:

Translation: During the Prophet’s fatal illness, he used to recite the Mu’auwidhat (Surat An-Nas and Surat Al- Falaq) and then blow his breath over his body. When his illness was aggravated, I used to recite those two Suras and blow my breath over him and make him rub his body with his own hand for its blessings.” (Ma’mar asked Az-Zuhri: How did the Prophet (ﷺ) use to blow? Az-Zuhri said: He used to blow on his hands and then passed them over his face.)

5. Rasulullah strongly encourages companions to read Surah al-Falaq in the morning and evening.

Abdullah bin Khubaib (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Translation:  We went out on a rainy and extremely dark night, looking for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so that he could lead us in Salat.” He said: “So I met him and he ﷺ said: ‘Speak’ but I did not say anything. Then he ﷺ said: ‘Speak.’ But I did not say anything. He ﷺ said: ‘Speak.’ So I said: ‘What should I say?’ He ﷺ said: ‘Say: “Say: He is Allah, the One” and Al-Mu’awwidhatain when you reach the evening, and when you reach the morning, three times, they will suffice you against everything”.
